Well, one year later and I haven't burned it down!

Yep, it has been a whole twelve months since I bought my first house. That's one year of the mortgage paid. I actually have a bit of capital right now, not as much as I would like considering I have to finish the lease on my car in nine months. Le sigh...

But as far as the house goes, well, the kitchen is a tad small (no where near large enough to have a proper Ceilidh or "Kitchen Party"), I have all the furnature I need upstairs but I wouldn't mind another 6-8 chairs in the basement for when I have parties/Pancake Nights. I still need to re-plumb the sump pump as the "hose" irritates me. Maybe later this month I'll get that done. I have all the gardening tools I need until I figure out how I'm going to get a garden in somewhere and the neighboorhood kiddies have finally stopped stealing my front lawn-rocks. Dang, I need a new matress too.

SO F'N PUMPED!!!

The Winnipeg Games-Workshop Battle Bunker is opening tomorrow! Friday nights will be Fantasy Veterans and Saturday days are open gaming, as well as Bunker Tournaments every four months. All within a 5 minute drive from my house! Sweet.

Also, Talisman 4th Edition is being released October 1st. I've always wanted to own my own copy of Talisman, but eBay prices are just stupid.

Even better, October 1st is the first official Pancake Night of the 2007-08 season! So for all you people who know what that entails, 6pm to 10pm at Chez Reddz, be there or be square!

Friday July 20th, 2007

Women shall weep and Men shall fall silent for the deed must be done. Sampson be damned, the Angels will bear witness and the Gods will cast me down for the deed will be done. For years uncounted I have borne these things, but now they weigh heavily upon my brow, in knots and tangles and frays. I will cast them off, of my own free will, for my own good time has come. Fear not for me for it is mine own choice and not the whims of others, though others will jeer me and others will cheer me, I care not for their applause or shaken fists. This I do... this I do... of my own accord...

COUCH!!!

Yep, finally got the couch. Apparently (as I suspected and tried to fix 3 times) there was confusion with the delivery instructions which read: "del. sofa upon arrival. cust will pu 3pk tables." Now, I take that to mean that when the couch comes into the warehouse that it will be delivered and whenever the tables come in I will go and get them myself. This makes sense as I do not have a vehicle that can carry a couch, and as the tables won't be available until February I can get them then. But no. They took it to mean that once they have BOTH the sofa and tables they will deliver the sofa and have me pick up the tables, and the customer doesn't happen to mind waiting 3 months for ANY of his furnature.

WRONG!!!

Regardless, I have the sofa, still waiting (as I knew I would) for the tables. At least this drama is over.

XMas seems to come sooner every year... this year in particular. My parents are going to spend the holidays with some relations in Ontario, so my immediate family is going to do a psuedo-XMas a week early. Now, this doesn't sound like much of a problem, but I tend to do my XMas shopping a bit late, like the second or third week of December. So I haven't actually bought anything yet, and I only have a few ideas of what to get people AND because I bought a house I'm a little tight on cash right now. Not to mention that I have to get gifts for my S.O. and her parents as well as a new nephew too! XMas seems to get more expensive every year...

All I really want for XMas is the dang couch! (That's right... still don't have it...)

Tuesday November 21st, 2006

Well, the House Warming Party is this weekend. Those who got invites know who they are. Should be interesting. Some family, some co-workers, some LARPers, some Warhammer gamers, some other assorted friends. Yes, interesting.

I seem to not have any luck when it comes to deliveries. Washer/Dryer came *after* 6pm (when I was told for around noon) and the couch is going to be 4 days late. *SIGH*

UPDATE: ARRRGGGHHH!!!! The couch is *now* going to come *next* week... Why would my sales person tell me the 18th, and when it doesn't show up then he arranges for the 22nd and now they say the 27th!!! Sooooo ticked off.

I did however manage to get the materials to make a couple 6' x 4' Warhammer tables. Now I just need to make terrain as I have very little of very limited quality. This is a part of the hobby that I could not do whilst living in an appartment, should go well now that I have space. I also need to get back into some sort of groove for painting models as I have more than a hundred models to do yet. I should put my photo gallary back online and take some pics to post... One more project on my plate, and I haven't even started on any house projects yet!

See ya this weekend at the House Warming!

HOUSE HUNTING!!!

Yep, that's right. I'm tired of living in an appartment and am in the process of looking for a house.

This means, in the near-ish future, this site and all it's sub-sites WILL go down at some point when I move. Once a high speed internet connection is put in the site will go back up!

UPDATE - 2006/09/19

Well, I got the house! Moving on October 8th!

This means for the weekend of October 8th, this site and its sub-sites WILL be off line. Possibly for a bit longer depending on how long it takes to set up the new office.

A difference of opinion? Hardly. More like a difference of sensibilities.

If you paid to get into a weekend event and were given a badge to wear would you not wear it? And what is wrong in asking that someone actually do so?

If I was given such a badge I would wear it proudly, and if I forgot to put it on and some one asked me to show it to them I would certainly put it on properly and keep it on.

What's the big deal? Why would someone not wear it?

And now I'm in a flame war over my opinion... apparently it is my "Draconian" mindset and my tendency to "Rules Lawyer". *pthhhpt* I call it "A Damn Good Policy".

FUN @ WORK

My boss, Demyan, had made coffee at the office this morning. Or so he thought. He forgot to put the grounds in and ended up with hot water. That, in and of itself is funny. However, on his second attempt I was able to get to the coffee maker first just as it was finishing brewing. I made myself a cup, and then found an old pot from a busted machine which looked identical and hid the full pot. Then I strolled to Demyan's office and told him he better go and get some coffee before I ended up drinking it all. Hillarity ensued! "KAHN!!!!!!"

Yeah, this is a cool place to work. Jeff and Drew are constantly pranking each other too, and sometimes me and Demyan get in on it and blame it on the other one. Fun stuff. Good times.

NEW GLASSES!

Yep, got them on the weekend. Still getting used to the new feel and shape. I can see the bottom edge of the lens in my field of vision sometimes. But everything is clearer now. Can't believe it's been 12 years since my last new pair. The old ones were sooooo far gone.

The strange thing is, they are so different in style to my old ones, and yet I always have to point them out to people. No one has noticed them of their own accord. Weird, and yet comforting. I was hoping for reactions along the lines of "Hey, there's something different about you, but I can't place it..." but instead I got nothing. Ah well. At least I'm happy with them.

I like winter.

Not XMas, winter. Hear me out on this one.

I like the look of snow. How it covers the imperfections of the land upon which it lays. Trees exploding in white hoarfrost. The brightness of it. It's calming.

I like cold weather. Not wind with the chill it brings, but the crispness of the air when it is chilly. White plumes of breath just to remind you of your own warmth. I sleep better when the temperature is cooler.

Have you ever gone out into a field of snow on the edge of suburbia where there is no noise of cars and people, when the wind is calm and just listened?

That's why I like winter. It's cleaner than other seasons, it's calmer (except at the mall pre-XMas), it's serene. It's wonderful.

Monday November 14th, 2005

So, I've taken some time to look at some things and here is where I stand.

Warhammer: a fine hobby. I will continue it, but after the "Hunt for Carlos Santiago" campaign I will be taking it slower. The Dark Elf Watchtower list is almost done and when it is I will move on to the Wood Elf Spirit list. I'll be taking my time with it as it is the "Crown Jewel" of my Warhammer career.

LARP: I like the "social"ness of LARPing, but not the politics of OWbN. Now that I am on the OWbN Giovanni mailing list I am reminded of why. The Werewolf LARP of Kory's is nice. I like that. I also want to explore my Vampire character, but perhaps 2 LARPs is one too many. We shall see.

D&D: I've been rather lax with the campaign I've been running. Six months in and I'm still in "module"-mode. The players I have are fine, but they aren't taking the reigns as other groups I have run with have. I'm not running the game for my enjoyment (well, not wholly) but the players seem to be content to let me lead them by the nose. We really don't have a plot yet and none of the characters have really stood out yet as a "person". We'll see where this goes yet.

Family: Wow, what a year. If you know what's been going on, don't worry about it. Stuff happens and all I can do is shrug, accept it, deal with it and move on with it. I've gotten myself worked up over it, but now I'm ready to talk about it (not here of course) so if you don't know about it just ask. Some scary stuff, but I'm coping.

Scouts: I've been trying to separate myself from the youth. I love Scouting and believe it to be a worthy cause, but I need the time that Scouts eats away at for myself now. I think that sounds selfish, but after devoting so much time to it and not being a parent myself, I think I deserve to be a little selfish. I should be able to just step away, but I can't just leave Pete hanging there. It's crazy, and I have to get out before it drives me mad. Sorry Pete, but come the new year I'm going to have to resign.

Work: I like my job. I like the people I work with (for the most part, hey, they're co-workers, not close friends) and I enjoy the workload and type. I slack a little more than I should, especially recently, but with all the crap going on with family and Scouts and a bit of the gaming, of course I get distracted, but it should not affect the quality of my work or my attitudes towards my co-workers and management. There is no excuse for that.

Dating: And with all of this, after seven years of being single I decide to start dating again. Being single was one of my biggest complaints. Now I'm not and I'm swamped with other crap. It's not fair to her (or me) and won't be healthy for any kind of relationship. I'm not going to call it off. I'm going to work it. I will not allow my stress, anxieties and phoibles cause any harm to this. I want this to work. In all of the things going on this is the one thing that I WANT. The rest can go to hell.

To sum up... I'm busy, I'm distracted, I'm starting to procrastinate. I need to prioritize and regroup. Please bear with me.

Pain. Life is pain. To live is to be hurt. Yet is it not in our nature to endure? No matter the challenge, hardship or difficulty? Nothing is worth having unless you have to earn it. I am no different than any other, except in how others see me. So I trudge along, working, sleeping, living, loving. Yet the crashing waves of the world continue to move against the shores of my life, cracking rock, grinding it into sand, leaving behind the dead things it spews from its depths... and yet amongst the sea-wrack a treasure, like a jewel the bottle glints in the light of the coming day. What message does it bring? "Message in a Bottle" by the Police echoes in my head now. Funny. I'm more morose than melancoly. I need a drink.

With that out of the way... onwards I go.

Monday July 12th, 2004

Well, it has been quite some time since I have updated anything around here... soooooo...

Keycon - held back in May it was a blast. Glad I had a hand at running the show but I won't be doing it again for a while. There are still some loose ends to finish up but now I have more time for other things!

Warhammer - the Storm of Chaos has started and so far I am 3 wins, 1 tie and 2 losses. The Woodelves keep increasing their numbers slowly and the Orc army is taking its time getting painted. I'm just not inspired by the models I guess. Warcon XIV is in September and I think the Elves will make one more showing. Then there is a Conflict tournament in November, we'll see if the Orcs are done in time for it.

Venturers - the trip down south to Many Point was a blast. The youth had a great time, I got some badge trading in, the paddles we made for donating went over magnificently. Looks like next year we may be making paddles at camp as a workshop. Three of the six youth attending received the "Super Scout" award and our unit took home a "Super Troop" ribbon that is now proudly hanging on our flag.

Fringe Fest - just around the corner... (see the calendar for what it will mean for my evenings :P)

Every weekend of July is booked and August is starting to fill up fast. There's only one weekend free in September. I have updated the calendar for July. August dates are fuzzy in my mind so that is why it is not updated.

New comic links coming as I once again have been reading more of these wonderful online gems.

Apology: Over the weekend my server was not processing *.js include files... annoying. Sorry for any inconviences.

I was gone all weekend to Moorhead for their Scout Show. It went really well. The Venturer's Paddle Making Booth took second place with a combined score of 296/300. Not bad at all!

On the way back from the States I picked up a few essentials... 24 of US Caffinated Mountain Dew (yum!), carton of Marlboro's (cheap!), and Megatokyo #1 & #2 (there are some who will kill me for them! ha!).

I should have my site calendar updated in the next couple days...

Well, this past weekend saw the destruction of my 3.5 year Vampire LARP character "gil", aka "Guillome du Brest". So I won't be going to the LARP for a bit. Keycon20 a BLAST!!!

Well, Keycon is over for another year, mostly. The con was good. The artshow made a lot of money for the artists and went as smoothly as it could. My con suite ("THE RED ROOM") was a fairly well received success (but I won't do it again for a while). I still need to finalize things for the artshow and send the artists their cheques but that's ok. I got to cover Craig the co-chair with foodstuffs (a la "Helping Hands" from Who's Line Is It Anyways?)

Now it's back to the drawing board for another year as I will be one of the co-chairs for 2004.

***WARNING***

***RANT FOLLOWS***

Ok, here's the deal. This is my PERSONAL website. This site contains things that I like, mentions some things I don't like, but in general is a place for me to express myself. It is not meant to be PROFESSIONAL, even though it contains my resume under the About section and has a picture of me wearing a suit on it.

I actually got turned down for a job because of some content I had on it a couple weeks ago. I don't think that mentioning the fact that I have been single for the last 5 years and saying that I would like to not be and to enjoy the benefits of not being single is grounds for not being considered for a job. Heck, I've read journal entries on the web that were WAY more detailed than what I had typed. I didn't even give them my URL or tell them to look at my website. They looked at my email address and figured it out. They said they didn't think there was an opportunity for me with them because my PERSONAL website wasn't PROFESSIONAL enough. Obviously their idea of what a PERSONAL website is is completely skewed. I don't need to work for them if they won't let me be me.

If you have seen my PROFESSIONAL work you will know that I do good stuff.

Having seen my PERSONAL website you will know that I am not a corporate drone and actually have something of a personality, a sense of humour and a desire to experiment with the knowledge of web programming/design that I have.

MORAL: If you are a prospective employer, don't judge a book by it's website. (Ok, that was lame...)

*sighs* well, back to your regularly scheduled whatever...

Things to do:

  1. Find new job
  2. Find new place to live
  3. Build UNIX server
  4. Find dynamic dns host
  5. Eat
  6. Sleep
Am I forgetting anything?
May 27th, 2002

Lately this quote from a movie keeps popping up in my head.

"How shall I serve thee..."

Why do I have this line spreading uncertainty and worry through my mind? Simple. Everyone this last while seems to expect something from me, and with no promise of anything in return. I have tried so hard to please everyone without comprimising myself that I guess people just got used to it and now want to take advantage of it all at once.

On a happier (or at least different) note, I have begun posting stuff to my Philosophy page. I hope to be able to add even more soon. Also, I really need to start adding to my External Links page. If you have any thoughts on what I should include for some of the sections let me know!

On another note, do you like the new title graphic on the left? I do. Now I have to spruce up the Nav bar on the right. <<sigh>>

One more thing before I go, please, please, please don't even think about having pity for me. I brought it all on myself. I could have been an ass-hole and taken what I wanted, I could have forced the situation to a resolution, either yea or nay. But I'm the nice guy, and nice guy's finish last. But at least we finish.

Reddz - hope springs eternal, bah...

Monday April 22nd, 2002

Ok, I finally updated my website... hurrah!!!

Hmmm... still a lot of content to fill in... oh well, at least it's a start...

I suppose I should fill everyone in on what's been going on in Reddz-land over the last while, but I don't have the time right now. Don't worry, I'll do it... some time... <<sigh>>

For now, take care and enjoy the sun 'cause it's spring!!! (finally)

Tchau!

Reddz - that guy you know...

Friday August 3rd, 2001

OK, here's the drill. I'm thinking about redesigning REDDZ.com and cleaning it up and such and then filling in all the missing stuff throughout August and September. Here's the thing. I need input. Check out this temporary page and then email me your comments.

Just take a quick look-see at the page and let me know what you think, please?

By no means is it done yet, so check back often as I make it better (new features/looks every Monday from now until it goes live!)

Thanks!

Tuesday July 31st, 2001

Ya know, I should update this a bit more often. Hmmm...

So here I am, end of July, working my butt off at work, working 12-16 hour days, pretty much just back from a mondo-keen holiday on the east coast, still single, still smoking, still gaming on Saturdays, and pretty much back to exactly howthings were before I left on said holiday.

How's that for the "lame-o of the year" award :-P

Anyways, gotta run, no time to waste, right? Right.

Saturday June 23rd, 2001

Man, last night was like the sign of the coming of the apocalypse.

So, there I was at Wellingtons, a run down disco bar turned goth/industrial/punk bar, with all the usual suspects around, when all of the sudden in walks everyone I knew like 3 or 4 years ago who I haven't seen since. Wow. I usually don't stay past midnight (I have the tendency to turn into a pumpkin) but I was there until well after 1am because as I was heading towards the exit, in walks a couple more folks I haven't seen for about as long.

Sheesh.

Most of the people who visit my web site kind of know I hang out with goth/industrial/punk people. But for those who are visiting this site and see that I am quite colourful, am a Scout leader, am a computer geek, and read online comics, among other things, might find it weird that I hang out with one of the most depressing sub-cultures the world has known. Well, I like the music, at a reasonable volume (loudly on occasion), and goths aren't all mopey and surly. In fact, some of them are very interesting, and the punks here up north aren't anarchistic vandals, in fact they are some of the most culturally influential people around.

I hang out in the cafe scene mostly in my spare time, especially in the summer when the lack of air conditioning in my apartment becomes more than a nuisance. But I am also an avid gamer, and through these two avenues I have met some very interesting people in this city. I wish I could hang out with all of them more often. [[sigh]]

See ya 'round

Monday June 4th, 2001

Well, now that I have time to send an update, here goes:

This weekend was Scout camp at Spruce Woods Provincial Park, and I've just about had enough of mosquitoes, ticks, burnt food, sunlight and walking for a while now. Fortunately the Jamboree in PEI will be less strenuous due to less insects, the food being prepared by adults and the fact that I will be working in the main shops with enough free time to do what I really want to do, relax.

Had an interesting moment after getting back into the city after dropping off kids and equipment. I pulled up to the front of my appartment block got out and started unloading my gear. Keeping in mind that I was still in uniform, this vision of beauty in a yellow summer dress walking her dog passes by, stops, turns and asks with a hint of a smile, "Are you a Scout Leader?" To which I reply, "Yes, I am. Just got back from camp too", grinning slightly as I am want to do. She replies back, "Cool" and smiles broadly and turns and continues her walk... I in the aftermath of this encounter can only think, "If I didn't need a shower so badly right now..." <<sigh>> So I watch her walk away and hoist my pack on my back, pick up my stave and paddle and go to my appartment. You know how hind sight is 20-20? I should have asked her if she would like to meet me for coffee in an hour or so. I hate missing open doors like that. It's things like that that keep me single, darn it.

So with 29 days left before I get on the train to PEI, my workload hasn't improved terribly much and I will be working more overtime. Yish. Not like I have time for GF's anyways.

I will make a note here of "THE PLAN" that I have formulated. I plan on getting on the train with one pack of smokes which should last almost to the island. Once on the island at the camp site I will have none, and cigarettes are not sold at jamborees. 10 days. Hopefully I will be done with smoking from then on. (Keep your fingers crossed everyone!!!)

Until next week TTFN!!!

Monday May 28th 2001

Well, I'm sick, I just wish that lung I'm attempting to cough up would get it over with and come out...

This is what I get for two weekends of fun in a row... oh well.

I helped Nat move on Saturday, she has a lot of stuff but she's in a REALLY nice apartment now. Co-ops are nice, but with my salary I'd get the short end of the stick.

Work is brutal. I may end up flying out to Alberta for one of my projects, and I have got to get everything wrapped up by the end of June so I can go out East for two weeks. I loathes deadlines...

This coming up weekend is the Scout camp for the Service Area, and it marks the end of the Scouting season. It's been a good year, and next year we'll have more Scouts and even more fun. For those who didn't know, that's right, I am a Scout Leader! Click Here to see the web-site I made for the group. My trip to the East coast in July is to the Canadian Jamboree as an Offer of Service BTW.

Other than that, not much new in the land of Reddz.

Monday May 21st 2001

Well, the day after KeyCon, and I'm still alive...

Let's see, I spent 52 hours at the convention starting at 7pm Friday night, got maybe 4 hours of sleep each night, drank more than was probably good for me (had to remove myself from the Vampire game because my snivelling Nos character was getting snarky at some of the other characters, and that is not how my character behaves at all), but generally had a good time. Played lots of games, met Michael Sheard the con-media-guest, watched some movie screenings and saw some people I haven't seen in a couple years, and almost blew a whole lot of money at the art auction, but didn't because I'm a wimp when it comes to spending money ;^P. All in all, not bad, but there were a few things that were not up to snuff with my remembrances of previous and other conventions. Oh well...

For those that were at the Con, see ya next year (if I decide to go) and may the paddle be with you!!! To those that weren't, too bad... come out next year!

Monday May 14th, 2001

Well, I've decided to try something new... from now on this space will be a news page where I will post anything I feel is worthy to be posted here. Fun stuff, bad stuff, whatever... I have been meaning to keep a diary for some time now, and I guess this is the best and easiest way.

Well, as for current news, here goes...

I nearly killed myself this weekend. Sort of. Friday night I took the first part of a canoe trainers course (7-10), then went to the bar (10-3), then the next day finished the canoe trainers course (9-4) went to the FredbyNight LARP (6-2) went to Humpties (2-4) then went to work on sunday (9-7) and stayed up online reading online comics and talking to Joel about KeyCon on ICQ (8-12)... so yeah, that was great, got maybe 12 hours of sleep all weekend... and next weekend is KeyCon at which I can expect to get maybe 8 hours of sleep the whole weekend... I am so dead...

All that and work getting bogged down and little old me trying to get everything done and out of the way so I can go to CJ in PEI in July...

I should never have spent the $40 on the ticket for KeyCon... oh well, here's to having a full time job and a social life that consists of camping and playing games! (now that I think about it, life ain't too bad, just need a gf is all)

Until next time, ttyl ;^)
